Chateau Batailley1989 Vintage

Chateau Batailley, one of the oldest estates in the Pauillac appellation, is situated on the Left Bank of Bordeaux. The vineyard spans approximately 57 hectares, characterised by gravelly soils that provide excellent drainage and optimal conditions for growing Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The terroir of Pauillac is famous for producing wines with powerful structure, complexity, and remarkable ageing potential.
Chateau Batailley has a rich history dating back to the 18th century, named after a battle (“bataille”) fought on its grounds during the Hundred Years’ War- it was in this battle that the French reconquered the neighbouring Chateau Latour, reclaiming it from the English after 300 years of ownership. The estate was classified as a Fifth Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, a testament to its enduring reputation for quality and excellence in winemaking.
The 1989 vintage in Bordeaux is widely regarded as one of the finest of the 20th century. The growing season was characterized by a warm and dry climate, which led to early ripening and optimal grape maturity. The summer months saw consistently high temperatures, contributing to the exceptional concentration and richness of the fruit. The favourable weather conditions continued through the harvest, allowing for a clean and abundant crop.
After more than 30 years in the bottle, this bottling has reached a stage of spectacular drinking. The extended ageing has allowed the wine to develop a profound complexity and depth, with the tannins softening and integrating seamlessly with the fruit and tertiary flavours.
