Founded in 1880 by Joseph Drouhin, Maison Joseph Drouhin has established a formidable reputation over the decades for producing some of the finest wines in Burgundy. The house is known for its rigorous standards, commitment to biodynamic practices, and a profound respect for the terroir. Volnay is renowned for its delicate, aromatic red wines, typically softer and more refined than those of its neighboring Burgundian appellations. The 1er Cru Clos de la Barre is a specific parcel located within the village of Volnay, exclusively owned by Joseph Drouhin. The 2011 vintage in Burgundy was marked by an early start to the growing season, with a warm spring leading to early flowering. However, the summer saw fluctuating conditions, with some cooler weather and occasional rains, requiring vigilance in the vineyards to maintain healthy fruit.
This clos (walled vineyard) benefits from an ideal southeastern exposure and a soil composition that imparts elegance and complexity to the Pinot Noir grapes cultivated here. Fermentation occurred in tanks over 3-4 weeks, allowing for a careful extraction of flavours and tannins. Following fermentation, the wine was aged in barrels for 12-15 months.
